Kolor is glad to announce the release of Panotour version 2. Discover what’s new and download the demo version.

All existing Panotour users can benefit from Kolor’s Update and Upgrade Policy and get either a free license for the new version, or a rebate on their upgrade, depending on the date of purchase.

Version 2 needs a new registration key. Please follow these steps if you want to upgrade your licence. Login to your Kolor account by using your e-mail address and password:

In the section “My upgrades”, you will find the upgrades available. After choosing your operating system, you can order version 2 of Panotour or Panotour Pro. If you have Panotour standard version, you can upgrade to Panotour Pro by paying only the price difference between the two applications (+ the update price if applicable):

After pressing the button “order” you will be oriented to the Kolor Store in order to proceed to the checkout. The software application will be in your cart. You will just have to click on your cart and place the order.

If you haven’t downloaded Panotour 2 yet, go to Kolor Download Center in order to download Panotour 2 or Panotour Pro 2. What are the differences between version 1.8 and version 2?

The new version of the world’s reference virtual tour software application for Windows, Mac and Linux come with new features. Have a look on differences between version 1.8 and version 2.0.

Prerequisites

Some Panotour plugins are written in JavaScript/HTML5 code. So if you build an Adobe Flash tour, and you want to test it locally, you’ll need to test the tour within a local webserver. Panotour contains an internal webserver, so you do not need a webserver if you click on the “View last built tour” green icon.

Demo mode limitations

Even if we’re in a beta stage, you can already purchase a license of Panotour 2 or Panotour Pro 2 to unlock the demo mode. If you already own a license of version 1.x, discover your special upgrade options. Without a registration code, you can still work with Panotour / Panotour Pro 2.0 but you’ll get the following limitations:

• XML is crypted, so you cannot edit the tour afterwards.
• A watermark is displayed on the tiles generated by Panotour / Panotour Pro.
• A watermark is displayed in the player when you show the tour through a web-server.
• You can upload the tour on a website and it will work, but with the above limitations.

Notes for the testers of the private alpha

IMPORTANT
This first public beta contains a known issue on the Gallery plugin. If your Alpha project contains a gallery, you’ll have to remove this plugin and recreate it.
If you do not re-create your gallery plugin, a crash will occur during the build of the tour.

User Interface

- Tour File system management
During the process of a tour creation you may build your tour many times, with different parameters, different panoramas, etc…
The directory in which you build your tour may contains extra files that are not needed by the last built tour.
A file manager window describing which files are mandatory and which files seem to be useless can be opened using the last icon of the toolbar.
The “red” files are the files that the tour built by Panotour may not need.
You can delete those files by checking them, and click on the “Delete selected files” button.
If you did not copied any file into the tour data directory, all the red files should be deleted.
If you copied some files into this directory, and if those files are needed by the tour, be sure to uncheck them if you click on the “Selection/Not needed files” button.

- Replace panorama file
A new entry is available in the contextual menu of a panorama.
Select a single panorama in the “Tour” area, and right click to see this new entry : “Replace panorama file”.
This entry allows you to replace the image(s) file(s) of the panorama.
The new image should have the same aspect ratio as the original image.
If you set some spots in the original image, the new image should also have the same heading to be sure that the spots fit the new panorama.
But they can have a different size. So you can for example have a low res version of a gigapixel panorama during your tour creation process, and when you are ready, change the panorama file with the gigapixel one.
This feature also allows you to prepare a big tour before the panoramas are even shot.

Important Note

During the first run of Panotour/Panotour Pro 2.0 Beta 2, starting the application may take some time.
This extra time that will occur only during this first session is due to the removal of all temporary files that Panotour Pro did not erased in the previous beta version.
With this new version every temporary file used in a Panotour/Panotour Pro session are erased when closing Panotour.

New feature

The Panotour team is currently focused on bugs fixes, so no new feature should appear until the final release.
But we added a small one. In version 1.8, you were able to call external JavaScript functions on hotspots, but this was missing in version 2.0 beta 1.

For this third case study, Max Bolotov young photographer uses the virtual tour and Panotour Pro 2.0 for promoting New York based artist Yana Ouchakova and her Art studio (United States). Let us meet with this talented photographer!

Max, could you introduce yourself?

My given name is Maksym but most people call me Max. I currently live in New York City, though I moved to the United States from Ukraine in 1999. Since that time, I have spent much of my time exploring this interesting country and its wonders. I have been introduced to photography on my 17th birthday- when my grandfather gave me my first camera. It was a Zenith film camera and I absolutely fell in love with capturing a particular moment in time. Then I imagined myself pursuing this as a passion and as a career. I take pleasure in capturing not only our beautiful planet earth but also its inhabitants – people.

Kolor team really liked the virtual tour of Yana Ouchakova. We found it simple and really well compatible with your subject, congratulations! Could you give us more details about the virtual tour?

Every project that I embark on starts with an in-depth conversation between the client and myself. It is very important that each party contribute to a primary vision so that executing that vision can be a mutually rewarding experience. Shooting the tour is the easiest part – it’s the planning that’s the key to accomplishing exactly what we want. With Yana Ouchakova’s virtual tour, I wanted to exhibit a very different side of the virtualtour world.

Every day I discover new ways to use my panoramas and virtual tours to help businesses and people in their graphic presentations. The entire idea behind a tour such as this was to offer artists a unique way to display their portfolio and work. I spoke to Yana Ouchakova who is an independent artist in New York City and she frequently mentioned that much of her time is dedicated to networking and speaking to various galleries and/or potential buyers. This means of displaying her work would allow her to focus more time in creating rather than to focus on the marketing aspect of her business. Now, thank to this virtual tour, her work is neatly and interactively shown and contained in one link.

Many photographers are not experienced in enhancing their projects using the HTML code, so this project is very important to me because it shows to everyone that it’s possible to create a full virtual tour presentation using only Panotour Pro 2.0 features with no need of programming skills. The process itself is pretty simple. The addition of the images gallery in Panotour Pro 2.0 was incredible, and possibly my most favorite feature as it opened a new window of opportunities for my imagination.

What kind of equipment should we get to make this virtual tour?

On January 1st, 2013 I started something called 365 Photo Challenge. This is a self-motivating project that helps photographers get more familiar with their equipment and expand their creative horizons. It pushes one to take pictures every single day and post at least one complete photo daily for an entire year; hence the name 365 Photo challenge. This project has taught me many lessons and one of the most important is investigating different types of photography. I’ve discovered and experimented new fields like: little Planet photography, still life, and portraits to name a few. I am about 2 months away from completing the entire project. My biggest and most recent project is ACMB Photography. I created the company with a partner and reliable friend Alex Chechelnitsky. We had a vision of creating a one-stop visual marketing solution for restaurants in New York City to showcase their establishment on internet. I have found ways to creatively incorporate my personality into the work. We are constantly pushing our limits as photographers – for example, we just recently shot an aerial virtual tour from a 66 foot tall crane and are investing in a drone to take our aerial panoramas to the next level.

Important note

This new beta version fixes the main issues that happened in the third beta version such as: crashes on group and panorama management, bad gallery images management. However, note that a crash can occur when removing the floorplan of the project, by “shift-clicking” the image button in the floorplan form of the project parameter. It happens if the hotspot editor contains the floorplan that you want to remove. So if you want to remove the floorplan in this new version, first click on a empty part of the panorama area, to be sure to unselect the floorplan and to remove it from the hotspot editor.

José, could you introduce yourself?
I was born in Salamanca (Spain) in 1971. Since the end of the 1980′s, photography has been, and still is, for me a constant means of viewing and interpreting the world, life, and people. My specialities are social photography and virtual tours. I moved smoothly from the darkroom to the digital world, continually investigating new fields in photography, constantly exploring visual images. Over the years my work has been gradually in exhibitions and publications, and these are the paths which have gradually brought me to where I am at the present time.

Kolor team really liked the virtual tour. We found it attractive to show a part of the spanish heritage! Could you give us more details about the virtual tour?

I feel privileged to work for something that I feel profound passion. Each tour is a challenge that I face with the maximum enthusiasm, trying to deliver the best of myself. I believe that I am not only a person who is familiar with its camera but a photographer who perceives and strives to control the light. Fabio, could you introduce yourself?

My name is Fabio Musio, Italian photographer and webdesigner based in Atlanta, United States. My passion for photography, webdesign and new technology converged to 360 panoramic photography years ago and are now my core service and my main passion. I love the challenge of capturing the entire atmosphere of a location through a panoramic image and I strongly believe that in the future this is going to be the main media.

Kolor team really liked the virtual tour of the campus. We found it simple and really well compatible with your subject, congratulations! Could you give us more details about the virtual tour?

Working on a virtual tour of a place so unique, vast and with so many locations was very difficult since the beginning of the planning. First, I had to study the sunlight during the different times of the day, location by location. Second I had to become a weatherman during this crazy summer. More than once I was shooting minutes before a storm was hitting the campus. I needed also to climb to rooftops with my equipment and my loyal companion, a 6 meter carbon fiber pole.

I consider the photo-shooting the easiest part of the job, even if it took me about 1 hour per 360. Post-production has been massive: I really wanted to show the details of the campus using HDR without making the imagery look fake or cartoonish. I spent several hours stitching and preparing the images and thanks God I could listen to Radio Monte Carlo and Nick the Nightfly: I cannot work at the computer without it.

What kind of equipment did you use to make this virtual tour?

Do you have other projects you would like to share with us?

I just started a collaboration in Italy to provide high quality virtual tours. You can find more information at www.360graphicstudio.com. Also, I have another experimental project that I’m working on but it’s still kind-of-secret. What I can share is that is going to be a very big virtual tour (or maybe I should call it giga-virtual tour ).

This new version includes the 1.17 Pre Release version of krpano player.

You can now build a multi-resolution tour using an HTML5 player.

Full spherical panoramas and planar panoramas can be displayed at full resolution on desktop computers with the HTML5 player and on mobile devices.

Partial spherical panoramas (i.e. not 360×180°) are supported but not with multi-resolution.

Important note for all Branding-Free license owners

With this new player version, the license management changed. The branding-free license you used in the 1.x versions and in prior alpha and beta versions of Panotour Pro 2.0 cannot be used anymore. What’s new in version 2?

Panotour and Panotour Pro 2.0 allows users to create virtual tours of another kind. Indeed, this new version has been designed following three main principles:

• Pleasant. The user can add a photo gallery, video content coming from Youtube, Dailymotion or Vimeo, a PDF document, a link toward an external website adding value and customization for each virtual tour created. Panotour Pro includes Livepano, a paid addon to merge videos with the still photographic content of the virtual tours to integrate for instance a restaurant owner greeting its customers.
• Simple. The software eliminates programming tasks, by default the user will find at his disposal widgets, graphical themes, display modules (menu with thumbnails, categories) social networks sharing buttons.
• Responsive. Virtual tours generated can be displayed using HTML 5 on all devices (computers, tablets, smartphones) responding to changing standards of the web. The use of the gyroscope brings an even more immersive user experience.

How to purchase a license or upgrade my current version?

In the previous version, the change of template affected spots, which lost their styles and their action parameters.

As already announced, a new RC for Panotour et Panotour Pro, our virtual tour software, has been released.
Panotour and Panotour Pro 2.1 final version will be available soon for free for all Panotour 2.0 users. This update brings several improvements including one regarding the loading time of projects.

When you save a project Panotour now saves 2 files:

• A “.kpt” file, like before, containing all the source datas of the project and all its parameters.
• A new “cache” file. This new file contains some optional datas used during the loading of a project and during the build of a tour.

The result: opening a previously saved project is incredibly faster as you can see in this video:

Another example, opening the project of the Lac du Bourget tour which contains 23 panoramas including 3 gigapixels took 22 minutes with version 2.0. With version 2.1 it takes only 12 seconds which means the opening is 100 time faster!

The Kolor team has just released a new final version for Panotour and Panotour Pro our virtual tour software.
This update is free for all users of version 2 and does not require a new registration key. This version is optimized: loading projects and building tours is now incredibly faster.

Panotour and Panotour Pro 2.1 also enhance support for Ricoh Theta: the software automatically detects pictures shot with this device and offers you to load new presets dedicated to Ricoh Theta virtual tours.

Additionally, this update brings several bug fixes and visual enhancements.

Main changes

Ricoh Theta support

Panotour automatically detects your panoramas shot with a Ricoh Theta device.

If the gyroscope settings of your Theta during the shooting indicates that the panorama is not leveled, Panotour asks you if you want to automatically fix the horizon.

If you answer yes, a new file will be generated, and this new file will be used instead of the original Theta file.

We added two new presets dedicated to Ricoh Theta virtual tours, to enhance your Theta experience.

Loading time reduced by up to 100x when opening a project

Loading a saved project in Panotour is now incredibly fast.

When you save a project, Panotour now saves 2 files.

A “.kpt” file, like before, containing all the source data of the project and all its parameters.

And a new “.cache” file.

This new file contains some optional data used during the loading of a project and during the build of a tour.

This file can be lost without any incidence on your project, except the performance during load and build times.

Just a quick bench done on the project of the “Lac du Bourget” tour : Le Lac du Bourget

This tour contains 23 panoramas including 3 gigapixels.

Loading this project took 22 minutes with version 2.0.

Once saved with version 2.1, the loading takes 12 seconds only!

In this case the opening is 100x faster!

Memory usage significantly reduced

The new “.cache” file stores a resized version of your panoramas.

When Panotour loads a project, it doesn’t load the full resolution version of your panoramas anymore, but their smaller version.

The full resolution version of the panoramas is automatically loaded during the build stage if required, or you can load it by yourself in the hotspot editor, if you think that the reduced version of the panorama is too small to place your spots correctly.

If the panorama had been previously built and if it does not need to be built again, the full resolution version of the panorama won’t be loaded.

Reduced build time

When Panotour builds a tour, it cuts each panorama into many tiles for a dynamic and smooth loading of the tour in a browser. When you build the tour once again, Panotour checks if all the tiles have already been correctly generated. This step can take a long time on big panoramas or if your project contains a lot of panoramas.

You can avoid this check on each panorama, by telling Panotour to not generate its tiles.

When a panorama is marked “Do not generate tiles”, a new icon appears over its thumbnail in the main area of Panotour to indicate which panorama will not be built anymore.

You can uncheck this option at any moment.

New Generation Methods

3 generations methods for the tiles can be used to build a tour:

- The default, and recommended one, builds only the necessary tiles of all panoramas except those marked as “Do not generate tiles”.

- The second one generates all tiles of all panoramas except those marked as “Do not generate tiles”.

- And the third one forces a full generation of all tiles of all panoramas whatever their status.

You can customize the spot style of automatically geolocalized spots

When you geolocalize a panorama and decide to automatically create a spot at this location, you can now change the style and the tooltip of this automatic spot.

Bing Maps layer usage inside Panotour Pro

You can now set your geolocalized spots over a Bing Maps layer inside Panotour Pro.

This layer requires a key to be used. This key is used internally, it may be different of the one set in the PanotourMaps plugin parameter.

The key can be entered in the Preferences window, or directly in the spot editor.

Add a specific thumbnail for your tour that will be displayed on social media when sharing it

In the Project properties, you can select a specific thumbnail, on the left of the project name.

This thumbnail will be copied in the tour and used by social media when the tour will be shared.

Generated tours use krpano 1.17 final release

Panotour is now available in Turkish

Important

Projects are now saved in a way that does not depend on the language you choosed to run Panotour.

That was the case with 2.0 projects.

So when you will open a project saved with version 2.0, you’ll have to run Panotour with the language used to save this project.

If you do not so, you may loose some actions on some plugins and spots.

Once this project will be saved with version 2.1, you will be able to open it whatever the language used to run Panotour.

Kolor releases today an update for its virtual tour software Panotour / Panotour Pro. Version 2.1.1 brings bug fixes and adds the support of Digisfera PanoTag plugin in Panotour Pro.

The change log below lists all modifications brought by this update.

Main changes

- LivePano wizard correctly handles Autopano 3.5 project files.

In some cases, they were not handled correcly and the generated video contained some black areas on borders.

- The nadir can be patched on panoramas created from cube faces import.

- All needed libraries are installed on Linux when installing Panotour.

- Cube faces for mobiles are generated, and are used on Android browsers that do not handle multiresolution.

Plugins development changes

- Resources of a plugin can be written with same substructure in the generated tour as in the plugin directory.

This small feature, needed only by plugins developpers, was mandatory for the Panotag plugin that will be available soon.
